It has tan-yellow skin and orange fleshy pulp with a compartment of seeds in the blossom end. It tastes sweet and nutty.
Storage: Store your butternut squash in a cool, dark place where sunlight won’t hasten its ripening.
It can be roasted, sautéed, toasted and pureéd for soups, or mashed to be used in casseroles, breads, muffins, and pies. The seeds are edible either raw or roasted, and the skin is also edible and softens when roasted. The seeds can even be roasted and pressed into an oil to create butternut squash seed oil or even a seed snack for munching.
Fun fact: Butternut Squash is one of the longest keeping vegetables, lasting over 3 months when stored properly.
